Remembering the Nigeria 1994 World Cup Kit
The Nigeria 1994 World Cup kit was made by Adidas. The home shirt is green with a white shoulder yoke and a black-and-green geometric pattern, and the away shirt is white. Nigeria won Group D at USA 94 before losing 2-1 to Italy after extra time in the round of 16.
Nigeria’s first World Cup in 1994 produced one of the most recognisable African kits of the decade. A green shirt with a white shoulder yoke and a sharp black-and-green pattern, worn by a side that won its group on debut. More than thirty years on, the shirt still turns up on terraces and in retro collections, and a recent report says Adidas may bring it back.
What the 1994 Nigeria kit looked like
Adidas made the 1994 shirts, per Footy Headlines. The home shirt is built on a green base with a white shoulder yoke and white sleeve trim. A black-and-green geometric pattern runs across the body, and a black fold-over collar finishes it. The chest carries retro Adidas lettering and a circular vintage Nigeria Football Association crest.
The away shirt is white and uses the same geometric pattern across the whole shirt, with a white collar trimmed in green. Both designs were worn in 1994, the year Nigeria made its World Cup debut and also won the Africa Cup of Nations.
It is a bold design for its time. The pattern covers the whole shirt, and it belongs with other daring kits from that summer, such as the USA 1994 denim kit.
Nigeria at USA 94: the results
Nigeria were drawn in Group D and finished top with six points. The Group D games and the round of 16 tie went like this:
| Date | Match | Result | Nigeria scorers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21 June 1994 | Nigeria v Bulgaria, Dallas | 3-0 | Yekini, Amokachi, Amunike |
| 25 June 1994 | Argentina v Nigeria, Foxborough | 2-1 | Siasia |
| 30 June 1994 | Greece v Nigeria, Foxborough | 0-2 | George, Amokachi |
| 5 July 1994 | Italy v Nigeria (round of 16), Foxborough | 2-1 after extra time | Amunike |
The Argentina match was the only group defeat, and Nigeria still topped the table. Their reward was a round of 16 tie with Italy, per Wikipedia’s group page.
The Italy game
Emmanuel Amunike gave Nigeria the lead after 25 minutes. Roberto Baggio equalised for Italy in the 88th minute, with Nigeria two minutes from the quarter-finals. In extra time Baggio scored again from the penalty spot in the 102nd minute, and Italy went through 2-1. Nigeria went out in the round of 16 at their first World Cup.
Why the shirt is still talked about
Three things keep this kit in the conversation:
- The pattern. It is easy to spot from across a pitch or a street.
- The timing. It was worn at Nigeria’s World Cup debut, so the shirt and the moment are tied together.
- The influence. It shaped later designs. For its 2018 Naija collection, Nike designer Matthew Wolff drew on the 1994 look, with a feather-style pattern on the sleeves, according to AIGA Eye on Design.
Footy Headlines also reported in September 2026 that Adidas could release a retro remake of the 1994 kit, as the Nigeria federation moves back to the brand after more than a decade with Nike. That is a report, not an announcement. Adidas has not confirmed it.
