Juventus Retro Shirts: Every Classic Kit Explained

Juventus have worn black and white stripes for more than a century, but they did not start that
way, and the club’s retro range is more varied than the stripes suggest. Our 44 Juventus lines run from a 1984/85
home shirt through the long Kappa era, the Lotto and Nike years and into the Adidas period, taking in the 1996
European Cup side, the centenary shirt and the unbeaten 2011/12 league season. The 1990s are comfortably the
strongest section, which matches where collector demand sits.
Which Juventus eras does this range actually cover?
Kappa held the Juventus contract for more than twenty years, so most of this range carries their branding:
- 1980s — 1 shirt. A 1984/85 home shirt from the Michel Platini era, when Ariston was on the
chest. Platini was Serie A’s top scorer that season with 18 goals. - 1990s — 18 shirts, the deepest slice. Kappa throughout, with Danone on the chest to 1995 and
Sony after it. Covers 1992/94, 1994/95, 1995/96, 1996/97, 1997/98 and 1997/99 — the run that produced the 1996
European Cup and three consecutive finals. - 2000s — 7 shirts. The Lotto and early Nike years, including 2001/02, 2002/03, 2004/05 and
2005/06, and the split-sponsorship period. - 2010s — 15 shirts. Nike then Adidas, with Jeep on the chest from 2012. Includes 2011/12,
2013/14, 2015/16 and the 2017/18 shirt marking the club’s 120th anniversary.
Why do Juventus sometimes wear pink instead of black and white?
Because pink came first. Juventus originally played in pink shirts, but the colour faded badly in the wash, so in December 1901 a member sourced black-and-white striped shirts from Nottingham through a Notts County contact. Pink reappears on anniversary kits as a deliberate callback to those first shirts.
Why did Juventus have two different sponsors at the same time?
Between roughly 2002 and 2007 Juventus ran split sponsorship. Tamoil, the trade name of a Libyan state-owned oil company, appeared in cup competitions, while Fastweb and later Sky Sport carried Serie A and friendlies. Sanctions made a single global sponsor impractical, so the shirts differ by competition.
That split-sponsor period is the single most useful thing to know when buying Juventus retro. A 2004/05 shirt is
not one shirt but two, depending on whether it was a league or a cup design, and the sponsor print is the only
thing that distinguishes them. The same applies across most of the 2002 to 2007 window.
Sponsor dates before that period are less settled than most listings suggest. Ariston is documented on the
1984/85 shirt and is generally described as the club’s first sponsor, but sources give different start years, and
the UPIM years around the turn of the 1990s are similarly disputed. Danone from 1992 and Sony from 1995 are firm,
which covers the bulk of what we stock.

What should you look for when buying Juventus retro shirts?
The 1997/98 centenary shirt is the most faked Juventus shirt there is, so on the vintage market it needs real
scrutiny. There is also an unusually specific quirk around the 1995/96 European Cup final shirt: the version
produced for the match was initially rejected by UEFA, which required player names to sit inside a white box, with
the result that match-issue and match-worn examples of that shirt differ. It is a genuine authentication point and
one that catches people out.
More broadly, Juventus shirts are easiest to place by their stripes. The club has worn black and white since
1903 with one notable exception: the 2019/20 home removed the stripes entirely for a half-and-half design with a
single pink line down the middle, which the designer explained as a nod to the club’s original pink shirts.
Anniversary kits reach for pink for the same reason, which is why a pink Juventus shirt is a deliberate reference
rather than a mistake.

They are replica reissues rather than licensed originals, and we are not an official club retailer. We reproduce the stripe pattern, crest and sponsor print of the original season on modern fabric. Original Kappa shirts from the 1990s are heavily counterfeited, so buy vintage only from specialists.
How should a Juventus retro shirt fit?
Italian retro cuts run slimmer than English ones from the same years, and the Kappa reproductions follow the originals in being close through the chest and shoulder. The Nike and Adidas shirts from 2003 onwards are more generous. If you are between sizes on anything Kappa-era, size up.
