England Retro Shirts: Every Classic Kit Explained

England 1996/97 Home Retro Jersey
Quick Answer
433FC stocks 32 England national-team retro shirts, from a 1980 Admiral home to 2016. The 1990s are deepest with 20 lines covering Italia 90, Euro 92, Euro 96 and France 98. All are replica reissues rather than licensed originals, and England shirts carry no chest sponsor.

England’s retro shirts are collected by tournament rather than by season, and the range below
reflects that: no club badge, no chest sponsor, just the three lions and whichever design Umbro or Admiral had at
the time. We stock 32 England national-team shirts, running from a 1980 home and away pair through the Italia 90
shadow-stripe shirt, the Euro 96 home and its notorious grey partner, and on to 2016. Note that these are England
national-team shirts specifically, not English club shirts, which live in their own club collections.

Which England eras does this range actually cover?

England changed kit supplier at clean, documented dates, so the design tells you the era:

  • 1980s — 3 shirts. A 1980 home, a 1980 away and a 1982 home, all from the Admiral period.
Admiral held the England contract from 1974 to 1984 and introduced the bold shoulder panelling that made the
England shirt colourful for the first time.
  • 1990s — 20 shirts, by far the deepest slice. Umbro throughout. Covers the 1990 home, away and
third from Italia 90, the 1992 home, away and third, 1993/94, 1994/95, the 1995/96 goalkeeper, the 1996/97 home and
away, and 1998 in several versions.
  • 2000s — 6 shirts. Including 2001/03, 2002, 2004, 2005 and a 2006 shorts set.
  • 2010s — 2 shirts. A 2013 home and a 2016 home.

We do not stock a 1966 shirt. The red shirt England won the World Cup in on 30 July 1966, beating West Germany
4-2 after extra time through Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick, was made by Umbro, and reproductions of it sit outside this
range. That shirt is often wrongly credited to Bukta, who had supplied England earlier in the decade before Umbro
took over from the 1965-66 season.

One more England kit is worth knowing about even though we do not stock it. For the 1970 World Cup in Mexico,
Alf Ramsey commissioned special Aertex shirts to cope with the heat and the squad wore white shorts rather than
navy, in the belief they would absorb less sun.

Why is the grey England Euro 96 shirt so collectable?

Because it was barely worn and never forgotten. Umbro marketed it as indigo blue rather than grey, and designed it to look good with jeans. England wore it just three times: a friendly against Bulgaria, a qualifier in Tbilisi, and the Euro 96 semi-final against Germany that ended on Gareth Southgate’s penalty.

Which England kit era started the replica shirt business?

Admiral’s, in 1974. Their deal with the FA gave Admiral exclusive rights to manufacture and market replica England kits in return for royalty payments. Before that, replica shirts were barely a commercial product. Admiral supplied England until 1984, when Umbro returned for a 29-year run.

England retro shirts and the tournaments behind them
Year Supplier What made it famous
1980 Admiral The shoulder-panel design that brought more colour to an England shirt than ever before; worn at Euro 1980.
1982 Admiral The World Cup in Spain, with a red change kit mirroring the home design.
1990 Umbro Italia 90. White with woven shadow stripes, worn in all seven matches, ending in the semi-final penalty defeat.
1992 Umbro Home, away and third all in stock from the Euro 1992 cycle.
1996/97 Umbro Euro 96 at home, plus the grey away that Umbro insisted was indigo blue.
1998 Umbro The France 98 shirt with bold red and navy side panels and tournament embroidery.

What should you look for when buying England retro shirts?

England shirts are unusual to collect because there is no sponsor to date them by, so the crest, the collar and
the trim do all the work. The Admiral shirts of the late 1970s and early 1980s are instantly recognisable from
their shoulder panelling. The Umbro shirts of the 1990s are best identified by their woven patterning: Italia 90
used subtle shadow stripes, and the Euro 96 home carried a navy crinkle pattern woven into the white fabric.

The change kits are where the collecting gets interesting, and England produced a lot of them. One kit archive
counts change strips in a little over a fifth of England’s matches during the 1990s, the highest rate of any
decade, which is why our 1990s section runs to home, away and third shirts from the same cycles. Some of those are
genuinely obscure: the 1970 squad in Mexico used a pale blue change strip that was almost indistinguishable from
white on the black-and-white televisions most people watched the tournament on.

Are 433FC England retro shirts authentic reissues or replicas?

They are replica reissues rather than licensed originals, and we are not an official England retailer. We reproduce the colour, crest and design of the original tournament shirt on modern fabric. Genuine period Umbro and Admiral England shirts are vintage-market items and cost considerably more.

How should an England retro shirt fit?

The 1990s Umbro reproductions are the roomiest, cut wide through the body as the originals were, and the 1990 and 1996 shirts in particular hang loose. The 2000s shirts are trimmer. Because England shirts are often worn over a layer in cold weather, most buyers stay with their usual size.

Adult sizes run S to XXL with some lines extending further, and long-sleeve versions and kids’ kits carry their
own size runs listed on each product page. Browse the wider England collection, the full
