1990s: shoelace collars, a snowflake away kit, an all-black Cantona-era shirt, the green-and-gold thirds, a grey
disaster that lasted five games, and the zip-collar shirt of the Treble. Our 123 United retro lines start with a

Which Manchester United eras does this range actually cover?
Our retro stock maps onto United’s four kit-supplier eras almost perfectly:
- 1970s — 1 shirt. A single 1975/80 away, from the Admiral period. Admiral took over in November
1974 and their branding first appeared on the shirts in January 1976, which is the moment United became a
visibly branded club. There was still no shirt sponsor. - 1980s — 13 shirts. The Adidas decade, covering 1980/82, 1982/84, 1983/84, 1984/86, 1985 and
1986/88. Sharp arrived in 1982 as United’s first ever shirt sponsor, on an initial five-year deal worth
500,000 pounds, and stayed for 18 years. - 1990s — 33 shirts. The collector’s decade. Adidas closes out with 1988/90 and 1990/92, then
Umbro takes over in 1992 for the run that includes 1992/93, 1992/94, 1993/95, 1994/96, 1995/96, 1996/97, 1997/99
and 1998/99. - 2000s — 54 shirts. The deepest slice of the range. Nike template design, with Vodafone on the
chest from 2000 and AIG from 2006. - 2010s — 19 shirts. Aon, then Chevrolet from 2014, and Adidas returning in 2015.
What is Manchester United’s most notorious retro shirt?
The grey 1995/96 away. United changed out of it at half-time at Southampton on 13 April 1996, 3-0 down and eventually losing 3-1. Alex Ferguson said the players could not pick each other out against the crowd. It had already gone five games without a win, was never worn again, and the club was fined 10,000 pounds.
The detail most retellings get wrong is that the grey shirt was not binned after one bad afternoon. It had
already failed five times. Southampton was simply the last straw — and Matt Le Tissier, who scored that day,
publicly called the visibility explanation one of the worst excuses he had heard. That combination of genuine
scarcity and lasting argument is exactly why the 1995/96 away is one of the most requested shirts we list.
How can you date a Manchester United retro shirt by its manufacturer?
The badge on the chest dates it precisely. Admiral made United’s kits from November 1974 to 1980, Adidas from 1980 to 1992, Umbro from 1992 to around the turn of the millennium, then Nike, with Adidas returning in 2015. Sharp was the shirt sponsor throughout, from 1982 to 2000.

What should you look for when buying Manchester United retro shirts?
Two things separate a good United reissue from a vague one. The first is the collar, because United changed it
almost every cycle in the 1990s: the shoelace collar belongs to 1992/94, the zip collar to the Treble shirt. The
second is whether a shirt is a domestic or a European version. United’s Champions League shirts of the late 1990s
carried different collar treatments and badging from the league version, and on the original market the European
variant is the more sought-after of the two by some distance.
It is also worth knowing which shirts are scarce for reasons that have nothing to do with success. The grey
1995/96 away is the obvious case, withdrawn after five competitive outings. The green-and-gold halved third of
1992/94 is another, later adopted as a protest colour by supporters. Both are in this range, and both are collected
for the story rather than the trophies.

They are replica reissues. We are not an official club retailer and these are not licensed originals or match-issue shirts. We reproduce the season’s colourway, crest and sponsor print on modern fabric. An original 1990s Umbro shirt in good condition is a vintage-market item and prices accordingly.
How should a Manchester United retro shirt fit?
The 1990s Umbro reproductions are deliberately generous, with a wide body and long sleeves, because the originals were cut that way. The 1980s Adidas shirts are slightly trimmer, and anything from the 2010s is closer to a modern athletic fit. For the 1992 to 1999 shirts, take your normal size.
Adult sizes run S to XXL with some lines going further, and long-sleeve and kids’ versions carry their own size
runs — worth checking per product, because a 1992 Umbro cut and a 2016 Adidas cut are not the same garment. Browse
