FG vs AG vs SG vs TF vs IC: Which Football Boots Do You Need? (2026)
Firm ground (FG) boots are the default for most players and suit dry-to-damp natural grass. Choose AG for 3G/4G artificial turf, SG for wet muddy pitches, TF for hard astro and cages, and IC for indoor futsal. Matching the soleplate to your surface protects your joints, your boots and the warranty.
Firm ground (FG) boots are the default for most players – they suit dry-to-damp natural grass, the surface most matches are played on. Choose AG for modern 3G/4G astroturf, SG for wet muddy pitches, TF for hard astro and cages, and IC for indoor futsal. Getting the soleplate right protects your knees, your boots and your warranty. (In the US these are ‘soccer cleats’, but the soleplate logic is identical.)
What do FG, AG, SG, TF and IC actually mean?
Every football boot is built around a soleplate designed for one type of surface. The stud shape, length and density change how the boot grips and releases – and using the wrong one is the fastest way to slip, roll an ankle or ruin a pair.
| Code | Surface | Studs | Best for | Avoid on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FG | Firm ground | Moulded conical / bladed | Dry-damp natural grass | 3G astro, deep mud |
| AG | Artificial ground | More, shorter, hollow conical | 3G / 4G astroturf | Short-pile astro, indoors |
| SG | Soft ground | Longer, often metal, replaceable | Wet, muddy natural grass | Hard / artificial ground |
| TF | Turf / astro | Dense small rubber studs | Hard astro, worn 3G, cages | Sports halls, wet grass |
| IC / IN | Indoor / futsal | Flat non-marking sole | Indoor courts, futsal | Grass and turf |
| MG | Multi-ground | Short rounded hybrid | Firm grass + 3G all-rounder | Deep mud, indoors |
Can I wear FG boots on 3G astroturf?
You can, but you shouldn’t. FG studs are too long and too sparse for long-pile 3G, so they don’t sink in – pressure concentrates under each stud and travels straight into your knees and ankles, and the boot wears out far quicker. Just as important, most brands void the boot warranty if FG is used on artificial grass. If you play weekly on 3G, buy AG; on old sand-based astro or in a cage, buy TF.
Which boots do I need for astroturf, cages and 5-a-side?
Match the sole to the actual pitch. Modern 3G/4G with long synthetic pile and rubber infill wants AG. Older, harder, sand-filled astro, worn 3G, tarmac cages and casual kickabouts want TF, whose dense rubber nubs are almost indestructible. Indoor sports halls with wood or vinyl floors want flat IC/futsal shoes. If you genuinely split your week between real grass and 3G, MG is a fair compromise – it just won’t beat a dedicated sole on any single surface.
