Cruz Azul and Toluca 26-27 Día de Muertos Kit Fonts

TL;DR

• Cruz Azul and Toluca both wore special Día de Muertos shirt numbers in Liga MX Apertura 2026 matches, on their 26-27 home kits.
• Cruz Azul’s white digits carry sugar skulls, candles and petals, while Toluca’s copy the cut-paper look of papel picado.
• Only the lettering is new. Neither report describes a new shirt or a retail release.

The Reveal

Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is marked in Mexico on 1 and 2 November. Footy Headlines reported two new examples on 2 November, both from Liga MX clubs that changed only the printing on the back of the shirt.

Cruz Azul used theirs against León in a 2-1 win that made sure of a place in the Apertura 2026 Liguilla. Toluca’s numbers made their debut against Club América. Details and more photos are in the Cruz Azul font report and the Toluca font report.

Cruz Azul: vintage digits with a sugar skull

Pirma made the kit, and the numbers appeared on both the navy home shirt and the bright green goalkeeper shirt. The white digits have ornate, old-fashioned curves and a faint skull pattern inside them. Colour comes from the calaveras, candles and flower petals placed on top. On the No. 10 worn by Montaño, a lit candle stands inside the zero.

The club crest appears at the foot of each number, and player names are set in a plain white arc above. Footy Headlines describes the typeface as a one-off matchday feature.

Toluca: numbers cut like papel picado

Toluca’s version, made with New Balance, takes its idea from papel picado, the perforated paper banners hung for Mexican celebrations. Each white number has a scalloped edge like lace, and the inside is packed with calaveras, cempasúchil (marigold) flowers, candles and stars. Toluca’s monogram crest sits near the bottom of each digit.

The white print stands out cleanly against the red home shirt, and it arrives soon after the club’s third kit inspired by the Cosmovitral, the stained glass landmark in the city of Toluca.

How It Compares

Cruz Azul’s digits stay solid and use colour for a few focal points. Toluca’s stay white throughout, with far more detail, so the effect is closer to a paper decoration.

Neither report mentions any change to the shirts themselves, so the tribute appears to sit entirely in the printing. For a wider view of the league’s designs this season, see our ranking of the best Liga MX 26-27 kits.

Yes, both fonts were worn in Liga MX Apertura 2026 matches. They appeared on the 26-27 home kits, plus the goalkeeper shirt at Cruz Azul, and the reports describe only new numbers and lettering.

When will the Día de Muertos fonts release?

No retail release has been reported for either font. Footy Headlines calls the Cruz Azul version a one-off matchday feature, and it gives no sale details for Toluca’s.

Where can I buy Cruz Azul and Toluca jerseys?

433FC is an independent retailer of replica supporter shirts. Our Cruz Azul and Toluca categories include the 26-27 home designs, without the special Día de Muertos printing.
