Benfica 1980-81 Adidas Originals Retro Kit Debuts On Pitch
Benfica wore an Adidas Originals reissue of its 1980-81 home shirt in a Primeira Liga match against FC Alverca, Footy Headlines reported on 3 November 2026. TL;DR
- Benfica wore an Adidas Originals remake of its 1980-81 home shirt in a Primeira Liga match against FC Alverca, with no advance notice reported.
- The shop version has no sponsor, while the matchday version added Emirates Fly Better and the club’s other current sponsors.
- The 1980-81 shirt was the first Benfica kit to carry the Adidas Trefoil.
The Reveal
Adidas Originals and Benfica launched the reissue through the club’s store, using the campaign line “a mística. reencarnada.” (the mystique, reincarnated). Footy Headlines covered the retail release on 2 November. Current first-team players appeared in the launch, and the shirt was celebrated by ten club legends from that era.
In its on-pitch report of 3 November, the site said the team then wore the shirt in a league game against Alverca, and called the move unexpected.
Design Breakdown
Collar and cuffs. The red body is finished with a ribbed white round neck and matching white cuffs. The shirt has long sleeves.
Stripes. White Three Stripes run the full length of each sleeve, from the shoulder to the cuff.
Crest and logo. The retail shirt has an embroidered vintage crest on the left chest and the Trefoil on the right, both raised from the fabric.
Sponsors. This is the visible gap between the two versions. The retail shirt has a clean front. The match shirt added Emirates Fly Better in white, and the photo above also shows a league patch reading Betclic on the sleeve. The player’s white shorts carried red stripes, a red number and a Trefoil.

How It Compares
The shirt recalls the 1980-81 season, when Benfica won its 24th league title under Lajos Baróti, won the Taça de Portugal and reached the Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals. The club’s current kits stay within a red-and-white-only policy, as our guide explains.
