The summer 2026 window shut at 23:00 BST on Tuesday 1 September, and with it the last of the squad-number announcements landed. Below is every confirmed shirt number from the window’s headline Premier League moves, plus what each choice tells you about the squad the player has walked into.

What shirt numbers did the biggest summer 2026 signings take?

Bradley Barcola kept No. 29 at Liverpool, Enzo Fernández took the No. 17 at Manchester City, and Bruno Guimarães carried his No. 39 to Arsenal. Tottenham handed Sandro Tonali the 16, Savinho the 17 and Omar Marmoush the 22, while Morgan Rogers took Chelsea’s 17 and Ezri Konsa the Arsenal 15.

All eleven below come from the signing clubs’ own announcements rather than transfer speculation. The table gives the number and the reason the player or club gave for it; the sections underneath expand on the ones where the reason is more than administrative.

Why did Bradley Barcola keep No. 29 at Liverpool?

Because it was never really about squad hierarchy. Barcola has explained that the number goes back to playing FIFA’s career story mode as a teenager, and that he decided then it would be his if he ever turned professional. He wore it throughout his time at Paris Saint-Germain and asked to keep it at Anfield, where it happened to be free.

That is a slightly unusual choice for a signing of his size, because the low forward numbers had not all gone. Liverpool have a recent habit of letting players hold numbers that carry personal meaning, and the club confirmed the 29 themselves when they announced it in August. What changed in Manchester City’s squad numbers?

City reassigned a spine rather than simply adding to one. Enzo Fernández inherited the No. 17 that Kevin De Bruyne wore for a decade — his favoured No. 8 from Chelsea was unavailable. Elliot Anderson took the 5, and Ayyoub Bouaddi kept the 32 he had worn at Lille. Three of the four most significant numbers in the squad changed hands in a single window.

Anderson’s is the one worth pausing on. The 5 belonged to John Stones for a decade before his move to Inter Milan, and handing it straight to a midfielder rather than a centre-back is about as clear a statement of intended role as a squad list can make. Why did Tottenham print three new numbers in one summer?

Because they were the window’s busiest buyers, and the numbers fell where the departures left gaps. Tonali’s 16 has a bit of history behind it: Gareth Bale wore it in his early Spurs years before switching to 11. It came to Tonali largely because the 8 had already gone to Conor Gallagher. Savinho took 17, Marmoush 22 and Mateus Fernandes 18.

What do Bruno Guimarães’ 39 and Morgan Rogers’ 17 mean?

Both are numbers the players brought with them rather than accepted. Guimarães has worn 39 since his time in Brazil, honouring a father who drove a taxi carrying that number, and he has never played under another. Rogers’ 17 is the number he wears for England, and at Stamford Bridge it follows Eden Hazard, Pedro and Mateo Kovacic.

Should you get a new signing’s number printed straight away?

Generally yes, with one caveat, and the caveat is January. Numbers confirmed by a club after the window closes are locked for the rest of the domestic season, so a printed shirt will stay accurate until next summer. What can still change is the player, though a January exit is rare for a signing of this size.
