Inter Milan Retro Shirts: Every Classic Kit Explained

Inter’s retro range is narrower than its city rivals’ but unusually well concentrated: 40 shirts,
more than three quarters of them from the 1990s and 2000s, which happens to be exactly the window collectors care
about. That covers the Umbro years with Pirelli across the chest, the Ronaldo season, the centenary shirt that
revived a design from 1928, and the treble side of 2009-10. If you are looking for the nerazzurri stripes at their
most recognisable, this is the right decade span.
Which Inter eras does this range actually cover?
Inter changed kit supplier often, which makes the shirts easy to place:
- 1980s — 1 shirt. A 1988/89 home from the Uhlsport period, which ran from 1988 to 1991. Misura
was on the chest through most of that decade, having followed Inno-Hit, the club’s first sponsor in 1981. - 1990s — 18 shirts, the deepest slice. Umbro held the contract from 1991 to 1998, and Pirelli
arrived in 1995. Covers 1990/91, 1992/93, 1993/94, 1994/95, 1995/96, 1997/98 and 1998/99, including the Ronaldo
shirt and the grey third. - 2000s — 17 shirts. Nike from 1998, Pirelli throughout. Covers 1999/2000 to 2009/10, including
the 2007/08 centenary away and the treble season. - 2010s — 4 shirts. Covering 2010/11 and 2011/12.
One useful marker: Pirelli sponsored Inter from the 1995-96 season until 2021, a 26-year run reported to be worth
around 234 million euros in total. If a shirt has Pirelli on the chest, it sits inside that window, which covers
almost everything in our 1990s and 2000s sections. Socios, DigitalBits, Paramount+ and Betsson followed in quick
succession after 2021, so any shirt carrying one of those is recent rather than retro.
Inter’s 1960s side under Helenio Herrera, built around Sandro Mazzola, Luis Suarez, Giacinto Facchetti and Mario
Corso, won two European Cups in 1964 and 1965. We do not stock shirts from that era, and it is worth noting that
reliable records of who manufactured them are hard to come by.
Why does Inter have a shirt with a red cross instead of stripes?
Because of the city. Inter wore a white shirt bearing the red cross of Milan’s flag and coat of arms during the 1928-29 season, a period when the club had been merged and renamed. The 2007-08 centenary away shirt deliberately revived that red cross to mark the club’s bond with the city.
Which Inter shirt did Ronaldo wear when Inter won the 1998 UEFA Cup?
The home stripes. Inter beat Lazio 3-0 at the Parc des Princes on 6 May 1998, with Zamorano, Zanetti and Ronaldo scoring, and the match record has Inter in blue and black. The celebrated grey hooped third shirt belongs to the same campaign but was not the final shirt.

What should you look for when buying Inter Milan retro shirts?
Inter changed manufacturer more often than most big clubs, so the maker’s mark narrows the date quickly: Puma at
the end of the 1970s, Mec Sport in the early 1980s, a brief Le Coq Sportif spell from 1986, Uhlsport from 1988,
Umbro from 1991 and Nike since 1998. Sources differ by a year on the Puma to Mec Sport handover, so treat any
listing that is very precise about 1981 versus 1982 with a little caution.
The sponsor does the rest of the work. Inno-Hit was the first, in 1981, followed by Misura through the 1980s,
then FitGar and Fiorucci in the early 1990s before Pirelli’s long run from 1995. The Fiorucci shirts are a
particular favourite among collectors and have been reworked by streetwear labels in recent years, which has pulled
attention back onto the early-1990s Umbro designs. Inter’s third and goalkeeper kits from that period, including a
yellow third and some memorably chaotic keeper shirts, are collected on design alone.

They are replica reissues rather than licensed originals, and we are not an official club retailer. We reproduce the stripe pattern, crest and sponsor print of the original season on modern fabric. Original Umbro and Uhlsport Inter shirts are vintage-market items priced well above a reissue.
How should an Inter Milan retro shirt fit?
Italian cuts of this period run slim, and the Umbro reproductions from the 1990s follow the originals in sitting close through the chest with a short body. The Nike shirts from 1998 onwards are a little more forgiving. If you want room over a layer, take the next size up.
