Zinedine Zidane 2001/02 Real Madrid Retro Shirt: The Galactico Kit
The Real Madrid 2001/02 shirt is from Zinedine Zidane’s first season at the club, following his then world-record transfer. He wore squad number 5 and scored a celebrated left-foot volley in the Champions League final win over Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park.
Zidane arrived in Madrid already a World Cup winner (1998) and European champion (2000) with France, and a Ballon d’Or winner. His transfer fee was a world record at the time, reflecting the scale of Real Madrid’s Galactico policy under president Florentino Perez. After retiring he returned to Real Madrid as a coach, leading the club to three consecutive Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018.
Why is the 2001/02 Real Madrid shirt iconic?
It’s the shirt from Zidane’s debut season as a Galactico, remembered above all for his outstanding volleyed goal in the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen.
What number did Zidane wear at Real Madrid?
Zidane wore the No.5 shirt for Real Madrid from his 2001 arrival onwards.
